  • This particular one was too good to trim so I decided to reproduce it in whole (updated Wed 12th March 2003):
    Hello,
About 4 months ago we were using I-Gear for our Internet content
filtering. It was problematic and one day while Symantec's licensing
server was down, I set out to find an alternative. Since that very day we
have been running DansGuardian (I installed RedHat and had it running on a
box in about an hour). We would like to be featured on your website, as
we are very satisfied with DansGuardian. Here are the specs of our
    DansGuardian Server:

Servicing approximately 5000 client computers for Isle of Wight County
    Virginia

Dell PowerEdge 2550 Server running RedHat 7.3 1Ghz Intel with DG 2.4.

This system is definitely overkill for our size, it was originally
purchased for the I-Gear system. My test system of a Celeron 333 with
128mb of RAM running DansGuardian outperformed I-Gear on our older 2Gb RAM Sun Enterprise 220 R with RedHat 6.2!
We have not had any problems.

The system services Isle of Wight County Schools and County Administration:

Thanks for such a great product, keep up the good work.

  • Shrewsbury School, UK. They just installed DansGuardian 2.4.6 on a 512Mb Athlon running RedHat 7.3, in conjunction with squidguard, filtering for around 800 users roughly 600 station network. They said "We've used Squid for ages. I'm really surprised at the lack of impact the content filtering has had on the retrieve time from the user's point of view. It's dead easy to install (I did it from source, having found that the RPM didn't work, for some reason), works out of the box with very little tinkering with the setup.
    It's superb!"
    Mark Twells Shrewsbury School, UK
  • The Gartree Community School, Lincs, UK. They use DansGuardian on Mandrake 9 on an AMD 950 Duron, 256Mb RAM, 20Gb HD.
  • I.E.S. Alminares, public High School in Andalusia, South of Spain. They use DansGuardian on a Linux 2.2 box. They find it very useful.
  • Harvest Consultoria, BR. Harvest is a brazilian consulting company, based on São Paulo (SP). "We use Dansguardian for control and block user access to sites that can compromise our network environment, consume intensive bandwidth and limit banners/advertisement content.
We also integrated into our needs web based monitoring and configuration tools, providing a friendly interface for its administration services. We also provide support and deployment services for brazilian companies that intend to control and monitor their user acess."
  • Freyberg High School, NZ. "We have been trialing DG on Redhat 6.2 for 1 year on our Student domain to see how it stacked up against the extremely expensive Windows-based solutions. Server was a P2-350 with 512Mb ram, and up to 300 concurrent users. I have been extremely impressed, and we've just about to release a replacement server running latest DG with Redhat 9 (using authentication against Active Directory) on a P3-500Mhz. Filtering is a must in our High School (Year 9 - 13, approx ages are 13-18 years old) and at the moment we are extremely impressed by DG." - Darren Joyce, IT Administrator / Technician
  • Great British Holiday Parks.
  • Belper School, Belper, Derbyshire, UK. "DansGuardian 2.8.0.4 on FreeBSD 5-STABLE with Squid 2.5.STABLE-10 and NTLM/winbind authentication. All running on a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz with 2Gb RAM, 2x 40gb IDE drives. Connected to a (strugling) 2Mb HDSL connection serving around 500 machines." - Matt Peacock
  • The community center LUX at Ratigen, Germany. "Dansguardian 2.8.0.6 for an open internet cafe on an AMD AthlonXP 2600+, 1,5 GB RAM with simple PATA harddisks, running on FreeBSD 6.0 and Squid 2.5STABLE12. Twelve concurrent teenage users haven't seen any porn page for a year now (at least here) and produce a maximum system load of 2%. The parents are happy, the staff is happy, the administrator is a famous man and the users don't complain, they help to optimize the filters, because the information on the "forbidden" page makes them curious. Great piece of software. The implementation was so simple.
The only problem is to distinguish between porn pages and quoted hiphop lyrics. An automatic incremental update for the standard filter lists without changing any locally defined ones would be nice. Thank you, quote me!" - Sebastian Bredt
  • Division Informatique, Rectorat de Rouen, Normandy, France use DansGuardian in order to filter access for 250 secondary schools (teen between 11 and 18). We have about 20 000 PC, 100 GBytes of web traffic each day, and 10 000 000 hits.
DansGuardian is setup on two Redhat AS3, server got 4GB of ram, biXeon 2.8 Ghz.
Load everage is about 5 all they day (seem very high but navigation is really fast). We've planed to setup a third server this year. We filter on just meta tag and title for real time filtering (for performance reason), we use also this free blacklist ftp://ftp.univ-tlse1.fr/pub/reseau/cache/squidguard_contrib/ and we use ClamAV as anti-virus.
We use a 2.8 version (with many patchs included) and planed to switch to 2.9 as soon as possible. - Cedric Foll
